There are rare weekends’ (Saturdays’) on which market open and that rare event occurred today. On the occasion of Ram Mandir inauguration on Jan 22, 2024, the Maharashtra government declared public holiday for January 22, which lead to stock exchanges to shift their trading session to Saturdays. As per the SEBI mandate, Market Infrastructure Intermediaries (MIIs) are required to perform a switchover to their Disaster Recovery site as part of the business continuity plan, following that schedule the NSE had declared special session for Jan 20.

Market have been experiencing pullback from high levels, reasons for which can be many like profit booking, geo-political tension, etc. Foreign institutional investors have taken out some Rs. 20,500 cr from markets in last 3-4 sessions.
