NSE announces change in expiry days for Nifty Bank, Nifty Midcap Select Index

In a circular dated July 12, 2023, the NSE announced a revision of the expiry of its futures and options (F&O) contracts for bank Nifty and Nifty Midcap Select. The NSE has changed the weekly index options expiration day of Bank Nifty from Thursday to Wednesday. The change shall be effective from trade date September 04, 2023 Monday and accordingly, all existing weekly contracts with Thursday expiry will be revised to Wednesday on September 01, 2023 EOD. The first Wednesday weekly expiration will be on September 6, 2023. No change has been made to monthly expiry date of Bank Nifty.

NSE has also changed the expiration day of weekly index options for Midcap Select from Wednesday to Monday. The expiry date and maturity date for all existing futures and options contracts will be revised/pre to Monday at the end of August 16, 2023. The first Monday expiration will be on August 21, 2023. Like the weekly contract, monthly contract has been changes from Wednesday to Monday.

An expiration date usually denotes the last session or day for using any contract, product, or service. In the financial market, expiry signals the end of the validity of a contract; after the expiry, the particular contract will not trade on the exchange or hold valid. Either the parties involved will square off the contract before expiration or they will give or take delivery of the underlying

In the derivatives segment of stock market, i.e., futures and options a contract, the expiry date refers to the last date of the contract, after which the contract would no longer be valid.

For different indices, exchanges decide particular days on which the contract will expire. The contract expiration dates are subject to change as and when needed or per convenience. The expiration dates of indices are mentioned below.
